The journey so far
According to Tom Smith, so far his journey as a worship leader and writer has been all about one thing: trust. “I felt a calling to lead worship from a young age,” he says, “but I wasn’t equipped and had no experience.” He chose to take a risk, and in the process found himself on the receiving end of God’s kindness, faithfulness and perfect timing. He also learned a valuable lesson about the nature of following God. “When we step out and follow the call of God on our lives, it gives Him something to play with.”

It was pretty embarrassing when I was leading worship one times and... I was borrowing Martin Smith’s acoustic guitar once whilst I was starting out leading worship. I raised my hands, full of praise in the presence of God leaving my guitar strap very vulnerable. All of a sudden I felt a weight being taken off me and heard a massive ‘bang’. I opened my eyes, looked down, and saw the guitar on the floor. The band stopped playing. Everyone was looking at me in shock. I knelt down, picked up the guitar and carried on leading worship as if nothing had happened, keeping my eyes shut the remainder of the time! The worst thing was Martin was in the front row at the time. But he never mentioned it! Ha!
