THE POWER OF THE CROSS - Easter Devotional
When Jesus was on the cross, creation held its breath. Daylight slipped from the sky and the ground shook, breaking open the tombs of those who were suddenly raised to life.
Everything was held on a knife edge.
And then…
‘The old has gone, the new is here! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.’
[2 Corinthians 5:17-19]
That’s the power of the cross.
Thought:
When God tore the temple curtain in two, the meaning was clear. The barrier that separated sinful humans from our holy God was no more. Not because of what we’d done, but because of Him. He took the initiative. He put things right between us and Him.
But the story didn’t end there. ‘For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed.’ [Romans 8:19].
God had played His part, but what about us? He had made a way for us to approach… will we?
Invitation:
It cost God everything to see His son on the cross. And it costs us something to approach it too. But this is one price we will never regret paying – a cost with nothing but benefits attached.
Oh, to see my name
Written in the wounds,
For through Your suffering I am free.
Death is crushed to death
Life is mine to live,
Won through Your selfless love.
This, the power of the cross
Son of God, slain for us.
What a love! What a cost!
We stand forgiven at the cross
Because of what we celebrate today, God now offers us the chance for freedom, for life, for love.
Will we show ourselves? Will we share that love and love with others? Will we reflect the selflessness of Jesus as we live this blessing out?
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for overturning death through the death of Christ. Thank you for the torn curtain and the broken stones. Thank you for bringing new hope and new life. Thank you for the power of the cross.
