The Friday Pickle: Do We Spend Too Much?

admin

28th November 2014

It's Black Friday, and even if you’ve been nowhere near a turkey in the last 24 hours, you’ll probably be aware of what’s going on today.

Basically, people are out shopping. Not everyone’s at it, but the general consensus is that this is one day where people don’t have to feel guilty about going out and buying things they don’t want with money they don’t have.

Which makes us wonder… has the world of modern worship got too cosy with the spirit of consumerism?

PA systems, image projectors, in ear monitors, iPads even small churches these days are no strangers to high-spec kit.

And then there are the downloads, the albums, the conferences, the quirky merch and the must-have books.

If you wanted to keep up with it all, you’d end up spending enough to make king Solomon blush.

So has it all got too much? Has the world of worship become infected by the industry of worship? Have we allowed ourselves to become consumers in the mistaken assumption that it will somehow help us to become better leaders?

Of maybe you don’t see it that way. Maybe you see the arrival of all these resources as a sign of just how healthy the world of worship has become - an inevitable consequence of high demand in a free market economy.

Or maybe you’re just too busy shopping right now to give it much thought.

Either way, Happy Thanksgiving!
