Nothing Can Separate Song Story
The song 'Nothing Can Separate' is based off a scripture in Romans 8. It's a very literal song from that scripture, in which Paul is saying 'I'm convinced that neither height nor depth nor angels nor demons nor things in this life or the life to come can separate us from the love of God'. I just remember reading that scripture one day and thinking wow! This is crazy. This is crazy, unconditional love, and do I actually believe that? Do I believe that the love of God is completely unconditional and completely without measure, regardless of what I've done, regardless of what I do, or regardless of what might happen to me?
Chorus
I was really struck afresh by that scripture, so I just sat at the piano and started to write the song, and that's where the chorus came from. Really, it's just a declaration of the unbreakable love of God which I think we need to remind ourselves of so regularly. Because there is so much that will happen in life that will try and convince us that we don't deserve the love of God, that we've fallen short, or that we have somehow messed up and that he's judging us. Actually, the reality is, we have a God who loves us so much and has done absolutely everything so that we never ever have to be outside of his love! If we are followers and believers in Christ Jesus, and if we have faith in what he did on the cross, then that qualifies us for this love that will never ever fail.
Verses
In the verses of the song, it unpacks this love a little bit more by talking about the grace that Jesus has shown for us on the cross, and about the fact that God is a God who runs after us. He is a God who leaves the 99, he goes after the one. And he's also a God, as shown in the Prodigal Son story, that when we turn to him, he embraces us. So in the verses, I really wanted to dwell a little bit more on that sort of love and grace that God demonstrates towards us.
Bridge
And then in the bridge, I love the concept that we are fully home and we are fully ourselves when we are in the heart of God. That the place that we are meant to be, the place that we are meant to dwell, is in the love of God and in the arms of God. That we're never fully going to know who we really are, we're never fully going to feel like we belong or that we are at home until we have experienced that deep, deep love. I wanted people to be singing about this longing for home, this truth that there is a place where I can be at home. There is a place where I can belong. And that place is in the love of God.
So really, the whole song just centres around the love of God! I guess when I wrote it, my hope was that it's a song that not just individuals, but groups of people can get together and sing and declare together that no height, no depth, no width, no length - nothing can separate us from the love of God. I think there's real power when we declare these things over our life and when we sing truth and when we sing scripture.
