Lent Devotional - In Christ Alone

Craig Borlase

1st April 2019

You’re got one life, right? Your time is limited. Your resources are finite. You’ve got to make it count, haven’t you? Every day you’ve got to add a little more to your story, to choose to live each moment in the knowledge that history is watching.

“I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand.”

[John 10:28]

Thought:

It’s true that we each have a unique story to tell… but it’s not the whole truth.

When we zoom back and finally manage a glimpse of the bigger picture, we begin to understand that we’re not the centre of the action after all. Our little story fits within another – a story far larger than our own.

The biggest story of all tells of Jesus, who took on flesh, demonstrated love like no other person before or since, and died a sacrificial death to cancel every sin. And because God raised Him up from the grave, it means that Jesus’s story now holds the power to comprehensively rewrite our own. Everything that we’ve done wrong, everything we want to do right; everything we aim for, everything we let go of – it all changes because of Jesus.

Here, in the love of Christ, we stand.

Here, in the death of Christ, that’s how we live.

And here too, in the power of Christ, we’ll stand.

Invitation:

There’s a reason the artists love to depict Jesus on the cross, arms outstretched. It reminds us of His invitation to every one of us. It’s an invitation to approach, not stay away. An invitation to see Him up close for ourselves. An invitation to start again, on our knees, before Him.

Every day, we all need to remember our place in the story. We all need to start again, with Him as our Lord.

Prayer:

Father God, I thank you for changing everything. Thank You, Jesus, for choosing life among us and defeating death. Holy Spirit, write all these truths on my heart, so that I may live a life that is worthy of Christ, and look to Him alone for all I need
