Recently I was at a service where things went wild. People were crying, shouting out, singing with more volume than I ever thought possible. The band were on stage, playing I-don’t-know-what, and every once in a while the whole place would erupt. It was powerful, powerful stuff.
What was the key that unlocked all that passion? Well, it was nothing more profound or complicated than two bits of cardboard and a sharpie. Have a look at this video and you’ll get the idea…
Now, the church service I was at was not the one featured in this clip above, but it helps get the idea across. As people shuffled to the front of the stage and showed how God had transformed them, it was impossible not to want to sing and shout about it.
So here’s this week’s pickle: would you give it a go? It might be messy (actually, it certainly will be messy) and you won’t have anything like the usual control that you have, but why not try? Give people some advance warning - whether it’s a post on the church facebook page a couple of days or just an explanation at the start of the service - so that you can get people thinking about the key ways in which God has changed them. Then stand back, join in with the rest of the congregation as you marvel at how good our God is. Then let the Holy Spirit do the rest.
