And Mary said,I’m bursting with God-news;
I’m dancing the song of my Saviour God.
God took one good look at me, and look what happened —
I’m the most fortunate woman on earth!
What God has done for me will never be forgotten,
the God whose very name is holy, set apart from all others.
[Luke 1:46-49]
What made Mary so special? How come she got the gig? Did she even have the financial resources to support a child?
While she might have been poor, Mary wasn’t stupid. Check out her words above: pure radical. Thirty years later Jesus would share a similar message, turning society on its head as he challenged un-Godly power structures. Mary’s words here offer a powerful statement of God’s love of the destruction of evil. Read through it carefully… it's pure dynamite.
We don't know much about Mary before all of this. Had her radical heart been beating as boldly as this for years? Or did the meeting with the angel Gabriel spark something wonderful?
What we do know is that she had been making good plans with Joseph, and that saying yes to God put those plans at risk. But God’s plans were bigger and they were better. What plans of God’s can you say Yes to today?
